Town History

Saint Gervais Sur Mare is located on the pilgrimage path of Saint-Jacques.The village is surrounded by forests of chestnut and oak and was renowned for making oak barrels and chestnut fence posts. Then in the nineteenth century the town boomed with coal being
mined from the local hills but then as the industry contracted people moved away leaving many of the beautiful old cafes, hotels and elegant buildings to fall into disrepair.

Today the village is thriving with a lively school and active local community filled with locals and expats who enjoy friendly games of darts up the local bar and spirited games of boules in the town square.

The studio has given the opportunity for many of the locals to showcase their skills including helping out with cooking , providing fresh produce and even teaching some classes.
